Hamburg becomes capital: poster vis-a-vis the representation office of Hamburg in Berlin. It is the kick-off on 26 October 2011 for the communication around the Green Capital year.
Introduction event on 17 November 2010
As an introduction to the European Green Capital representatives from politics, business, associations and initiatives met at Kampnagel in November 2010. Speakers such as Hannes Jaenicke and Professor Fritz Reusswig already stressed the necessity of dealing responsibly with the environment.
Opening of the Infopavilion, 13.01.2011
Since its opening on 13 January, the Infopavilion next to the Hamburg central station is the central point of the Green Capital. Environmental protection topics are presented in a permanent exhibition and various special exhibitions to sensitize people for environmental protection.
Kick-off event for citizens, 14.01.2011
The city of Hamburg welcomes the Green Capital year in front of the city hall on 14 January 2011 with a great citizen event. “Hamburg is moving” is the motto of the kick-off event, with which the city is calling on its citizens to do more together for environmental protection. Train of Ideas – Making-of
The Train of Ideas is designed from seven recycled containers in a several-month-long renovation process to bring the ideas around the Green Capital in an exhibition on wheels to Europe. More pictures on the construction of the train are available on request.
Train of Ideas – The start in Hamburg
On April 15th, the actor Peter Lohmeyer arrives in Hamburg with the Train of Ideas and opens the successful exhibition „Visions for the cities of the future“: The interactive exhibition shows how cities can be developed to be livable and sustainable in the future.
Train of Ideas
More than 70 exhibits hightlight the various aspects of environmental protection and climate change and invited to explore. Among the most popular exhibits were a scanner for water quality and the StadtRad-exhibit.
Train of Ideas
70.000 people visited the exhibition in the Train of Ideas on its tour through 18 European cities. The success exceeded expectations and lead to an extension of the exhibition after returning to Hamburg.
Train of Ideas – Exhibit „The City of Wishes”
About 7500 wishes for the city of the future the Train of Ideas has collected on its tour through 18 European cities. Exhibition visitors – children, students and adults – in the individual tour cities marked wooden blocks with their visions, creating the building blocks for the “City of Wishes”.
Train of Ideas – Tourstop Warsaw
The Train of Ideas travelled through 13 countries, covering a distance of approximately 15.000 kilometres. In ten cities representatives from administration, business, academia and associatons discussed topics of the Train of Ideas and the Green Capital in „Green Capital Challenges”.
City Tour „Hamburg for Green Explorers“
The Senator for Environment Jutta Blankau and students of the Otto-Hahn-School were the first testing the new city tour „Hamburg for Green Explorer“. The city tour through the city centre was offered free of charge every Saturday from May to October. For school classes, the free offer is valid to the end of the Green Capital year.
Green Events Manual „The Same in Green“
With the manual for event organisers „Events: The Same in Green“, the Green Capital is starting a motivation campaign for environmentally resposible behaviour. Detailed recommendations are helping to „green“ events of all sizes. The guide recommends, for example, how the energy use of an event can be reduced.
Green Capital Dialogue
In a series of events all Hamburg citizens are invited to develop ideas on the future of the city with experts on the seven key environment and sustainability issues. These provide the Green Capital citizens not only with the opportunity for dialogue but also to participate actively in the development process for Hamburg.
Branded S-Train in Hamburg
Since May 17th the European Green Capital is even more visible in Hamburg. A Green-Capital-S-Train in unique design is running now in the city. Many Green Capital citizens demonstrated that changing to environmental-friendly transportation without regrets is possible and participated in a broad campaign and used trains, busses and the popular local rental-bike-system StadtRad instead of cars.
Tree Planting Campaign „My Tree – My City“
On June 29th is the kick-off for the fundraising campaign „My Tree - My City“. Only four month later, all available sites for street trees can be filled. 2011 trees are planted by the city of Hamburg, itself. About 600 more trees are financed thanks to donations from citizens. The money coming from donations is hereby doubled by the city of Hamburg to ensure the planting of trees.
A Norway Maple for Billstedt
Central objective of the campaign is to close the gaps in the tree population along the roadsides of Hamburg, particularly in neighbourhoods, where donations are low or not possible. Therefore, the Norway Maple, donated for Billstedt by the Turkish Community Hamburg is very wellcome. The Turkish Community will shortly open an office there and has asked its members for donations for a tree in front of the office.
UNESCO World Heritage Hamburg Wadden Sea
In the year of European Green Capital UNESCO has awarded the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park with the title “World Heritage”. With the inclusion in the list of World Heritage Sites the UNESCO is highlighting the “outstanding universal value” of the Hamburg Wadden Sea.
Goodgoods – the Exhibition for sustainable consumption
From 27 to 29 May everything was about good products and services in the CCH. Ecological and responsible, but at the same time desirable, smart and high quality. The goodgoods exhibition has created a marketplace for modern sustainable products and inspired 10.000 visitors.
Jane Goodall – International ambassador of European Green Capital
On 3 September, Senator for Environment Jutta Blankau and students of the city district school Blankenese honoured the world-famous primatologist and environmental activist as international ambassador for the European Green Capital. Together they call on young Green Capital citizens to engage for environmental protection and biodiversity.
Environmental Youth Summit: „WE MAKE THE CITY!“
In September, 400 young people from the metropol region of Hamburg and Europe discussed for three days topics around environmental protection and climate change. Moreover, the young people could actively engage in environmetal protection with own projects, supported by the city in advance of the Youth Environmental Summit. Senator Blankau opened the summit together with EU Commissioner Falkenberg.
First Environmental Law Day
The First International Environmental Law Day / the Hamburg International Law Conference was held with some 200 participants from around 30 countries on 15 and 16 September 2011 in the premises of the Bucerius Law School. Besides the question on how law can promote climate protection most effectively, environmental risks of the shipping industry were discussed.
Green light for the Green Capital
26 October: a shining salute to the Green Capital from the popular light artist Michael Batz. He did not only let the Green Capital shine, but also said good bye to the Train of Ideas, which closed its doors after 4 weeks at Jungfernstieg

The Green Capital Hamburg in a detailed wimmelbild. The poster for children shows how environmental protection and the various sustainability projects are spread over the entire city.

„Pixi Wissen“ – a book with compact knowledge about the Green Capital for elementary school students providing short informative texts with many illustrations about exciting environmental issues. All students in 3rd and 4th grade from Hamburgs schools received this book this summer.
