The Building Concept
Aside from its cutting edge design, the Hamburg House offered the world the highest energy standard. The primary energy requirement of less than 50 kilowatt hours per square meter and year (kWh/m²a) for operating the building still is unique in an extreme climate zone like Shanghai and will be used as a reference for future projects. As a comparison: Germany considers a primary energy requirement of 360 kWh/m²a and more to be normal for newly constructed office buildings.
The low energy requirement of the Hamburg House was achieved by means of a highly-insulated, air-tight building envelope free of thermal bridges and the use of regenerative energies. The high ecological standards were adapted to the climatic conditions in Shanghai.

At the Expo with European Green Capital 2011
Hamburg presented its projects as European Green Capital 2011 under the motto, "Urban Visions". Here, sustainable urban development and the green city of the future were experienced through projects such as the Hamburg Climate Service Center (CSC/ GKSS) climate globe. The globe (diameter 85 cm) simulateted various color projections of the earth's climate evolution until the year 2010.
Additional future projects featuring sustainable urban development in Hamburg included the International Building Exhibition IBA Hamburg and the 2013 International Garden Show.
